It was there that he became fascinated with the process of shoe-making and began to dream of finding a way to automate it.
After years of experimentation, Matzeliger finally succeeded in inventing a machine that could last a shoe, a process that had previously been done entirely by hand. His invention, known as the "lasting machine," was able to complete the process of attaching the upper part of a shoe to the sole in just a few minutes, whereas it had previously taken hours to do by hand.
The impact of Matzeliger's invention was immediate and far-reaching. The shoe industry in the United States was transformed overnight, as factories were suddenly able to produce shoes at a fraction of the cost and in far greater quantities than ever before. This, in turn, made shoes more affordable for the average person, greatly increasing the demand for them.
Matzeliger's invention also had a profound impact on the lives of the people who worked in the shoe industry. The tedious and labor-intensive process of lasting shoes by hand was eliminated, freeing up workers to pursue other jobs or leisure activities.
